Buying an ATV is a big investment. That’s why you want to make sure your quad stays in peak condition for years to come so it continues to serve you well both on and off the trails. To save money on repairs, you should be tuning up and checking your ATV on a regular basis. Even if you’re not naturally inclined towards mechanics, there are many simple routine tasks you can do to keep your 4 wheeler in good shape, but you’ll need to have the right tools for the job.

Here at Brinson Powersports of Athens, we’re well-versed in the art of ATV maintenance, so we’ve created this list of what we think are the most essential tools for the home user.

Tire Pressure Gauge

Just as you check the tires on your passenger car, so must you check your ATV’s tires to see that they’re in good shape, evenly pressured and have no bald spots or embedded objects in them. You can use the tire pressure gauge in your car or grab another for your ATV. Since the tires hold up the entire machine, it’s important that you regularly check the pressure, as low tires increase your chances of a blowout, which can be particularly dangerous on rocky terrain.

Air Compressor

To air up those tires quickly and easily, you should invest in an air compressor. While it’s a bit on the expensive side, this tool will pay for itself over time with its usefulness, since you can also air up your car’s tires, your motorcycle’s tires, the kids’ bike tires and any inflatables you have like pool toys or air mattresses. This saves you a trip to the shop or to the gas station for air!

Multimeter

This small device fits in the palm of your hand and analyzes electrical conductivity. You can use this to determine whether something’s amiss with your ATV’s electric system, reducing performance. It’s also a handy tool to have around the house for measuring voltage, amperage and resistance.

Good Set Of Wrenches

Anyone who does any kind of repairs should have a good set of wrenches that includes both metric and standard measurements. Many ATVs have parts measured in metric so it’s essential to have both styles at hand. You can usually save money when you purchase these together, too.

Torque Wrench & Breaker Bar

Both of these tools are just large and specialized wrenches to help with stuck fasteners. A torque wrench provides you with precise amounts of pressure for parts under a lot of force. Breaker bars have a long handle to increase your leverage for removing tight bolts.

Screwdrivers

Screwdrivers are handy for a variety of applications. A good set will have both flat and Phillips heads in it and be comfortable and ergonomic to use. Ratcheting screwdrivers can be easier and quicker to use, but you’ll have to keep all the bits together.

Socket Wrenches

Socket wrenches and the ratchets to go with them will make your work go faster by smoothly removing nuts and bolts without damaging your quad’s paint or finish. Make sure to get the full set of sockets to help you maintain your ATV.

Urethane or Wooden Mallet

Properly applied, a mallet can be useful during ATV maintenance, so long as the head is constructed of wood or urethane, which are much softer than metal and less likely to damage coatings and finishes.

Now that you’re equipped to take care of your ATV’s maintenance needs, you might be looking to add to your fleet or upgrade to a newer model.
