Battery

Batteries are easy to overlook. They’re the type of component that, when working properly, fades nicely into the background. It’s too bad, because you can save yourself a serious headache by keeping your battery in good shape. Start by inspecting the battery posts. If they show signs of corrosion or crusting, it might be time to buy a new battery. A little bit of debris and dust can be wiped away, but it’s far better to replace a worn out battery early on than wait for it to go totally bust. When storing your UTV during the winter, make sure to hook up your battery to a tender in order to keep it charged.

Tire Pressure

A set of tough off-road tires will serve your UTV well, but you’ve got to keep them in good condition if you want them to last. Importantly, worn or damaged tires can be an on-trail hazard that could lead to a blowout or worse. A pressure gauge is an inexpensive way to keep an eye on tire pressure, and regular examination of the tire treads and wall for wear, gouges, and lodged objects will keep your tires operating correctly.

Oil and Coolant

Oil and coolant keep motor vehicles running by cooling and lubricating engine components. While UTVs shouldn’t lose oil too quickly, you’ll still need to check levels and viscosity on a regular basis. After it begins to deteriorate, head to a service station for an oil change. For the coolant, you’ll likely never have to flush it entirely, but keeping it at the right level is still important.

Filters

Air, fuel, and oil filters help keep harmful elements out of your engine. Whenever you change your UTV oil or take it in for a tune up, have the mechanics check the filters if they don’t do so. Fuel filters last a long time, but oil filters should be changed out as often as you change the oil, and air filters should be replaced once or twice a year.

Staying on top of maintenance will keep your UTV happy and running for a long time. Taking care of your investment should be a no-brainer, but if you still need help or advice, don’t hesitate to call or visit Brinson Powersports of Athens.
